Springfield, Massachusetts is known as the "City of Firsts" for its precedent-setting history in areas of culture, technology, entertainment and industry. The birthplace of basketball, Dr. Seuss and the Duryea automobile, the city has provided the tools, the talent and the perfect environment for creation, invention and innovation. The city is charging into the future with a revitalized community outlook and booming economic developments, including its growing role as a hub of fiber-optic cable for the telecommunications industry.

First settled by William Pynchon, assistant treasurer of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and an expedition of at least seven other men in 1636, the city was founded on land purchased from Native Americans in the neighboring village of Agawam. Residential growth proceeded slowly until the 1770s, when George Washington selected the city as the site of the first National Armory. Over the next century, the city rose to prominence as a growing industrial power. Nicknamed "The City of Homes" for its multitude of Victorian mansions and many single-family workers' homes, the city emerged as a major arms manufacturer with the establishment of the Smith & Wesson factory in 1856. The Duryea Motor Wagon, built by residents Charles and Frank Duryea in 1893, would be the first successful gas-engine vehicle built in the U.S. as well as the first automobile offered for sale in the nation. The city's automotive industry prospered for the next half-century, with the Rolls-Royce automobile and the Indian Motorcycle among its most popular products.

In 1891, physical education teacher James Naismith invented basketball, now the city's most fabled export, at the local YMCA. Naismith created the sport in order to fill the gap between the baseball and football seasons. In 1968, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was opened at Springfield College. Though it has relocated twice in the years since, most recently to a basketball-shaped structure in 2002, the museum remains one of the city's most popular attractions, drawing fans of the sport from around the world.

In addition to its rich history and commercial appeal, Springfield is home to a growing arts community. The tree-lined Quadrangle is the city's cultural center, with its public library and four diverse museums. The city's 17 neighborhoods (Bay Area, Boston Road, Brightwood, East Forest Park, East Springfield, Forest Park, Indian Orchard, Liberty Heights, Metro Center, Memorial Square, McKnight, Old Hill, Pine Point, Six Corners, Sixteen Acres, South End, Upper Hill) are home to an architecturally significant housing stock, including six historic districts.

The city offers an abundance of beautiful housing for every taste and lifestyle, all available at a cost significantly lower than in the eastern part of Massachusetts. Victorian homes, farm houses, contemporary palaces, condominiums and apartments are found in every neighborhood. Special complexes to accommodate the elderly are also available. The city is blessed with a thriving civic life, a strong sense of community, culture, economic health and the joy of living well.

Massachusetts: The Past, Present & Future of Our Country

"Why Massachusetts?"

Why not? Located in the heart of New England, Massachusetts is the region's most popular state. Rich with the history of our country and still on the cutting edge of technology, Massachusetts offers a perfect blend of the past, present and future.

From the stunning seacoast, Cape Cod, the islands and Boston to the peaceful beauty of the Berkshires and the Blue Hills, Massachusetts offers something to everyone! Every year, new residents are drawn to Massachusetts for the diversity of culture and activities available in Boston, the picturesque seaside communities, and the quaint rural towns for which New England is known.

With New Hampshire and Vermont on the northern border, New York to the west, and Connecticut and Rhode Island bordering on the south, Massachusetts is the most centrally located of the New England States. Cape Cod juts out into the Atlantic Ocean on the east like a bent arm, creating an easily recognizable state shape. A day trip to one of Massachusetts' beautiful beaches or islands is easily accessible from any part of the state, as is a trip to the Berkshires in the western part of the state.

For all of these reasons and more, it's easy to see why people are so proud to say they live in Massachusetts!
